1. Who are These Visitors and What is the International Visitors Program?

The International Visitor Program (IVP) operates under authority of the Mulual Educational and Cultural Exchange Act of 1961 (Fulbright-Hays Act). The Department of State directs the program in cooperation with a wide range of non-profit organizations operating under cooperative agreements with the Department of State.

The IVP brings participants from all over the world to the United States each year to meet and confer with their professional counterparts and to experience the U.S. firsthand. The visitors are current or potential leaders in government, politics, the media, educaiton, and other fields. They are selected by American Embassy officials overseas.

More than 200 current and former Heads of State, 1,500 cabinet-level ministers, and many other distinguished world leaders in government and the private sector have participated in teh International Visitors Program. Forty-seven Current Heads of Geovernment and Chiefs of State are International Visitor Program Alumni.

2. Is the Oklahoma City IVC Connected with a National Group?

Yes. The National Council of International Visitors (NCIV) is composed of 96 community-based organizations who arrange professional programs and provide cultural activities and home hospitality opportunities for forien leaders, specialists, and international scholars in their communities.

 

3. What is a Citizen Diplomat?

Someone once said: "World Peace will be achieved one handshake at a time". As we understand other cultures and share our own, we each make a contribution to peace. The NCIV network was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize in 2001 by Senator Arlen Specter of Pennsylvania.


4. How Can I Get Involved?

You can attend any of the IVC meetings. The meetings are held from 11:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. on the 1st Thursday of each month. Anyone interested in international concerns is welcome. Our newsletters are published monthly and can be viewed here.
